Do you have a dark corner of a room? Or perhaps you have an odd shaped room you don't know what to do with? Well, I had an odd shaped room in my house that I just left empty because I didn't know how to utilize the space. It was long and narrow just off the living room. Since it was off to it's self I didn't know what to do.
Well I surveyed the situation and decided it would make a wonderful reading nook. Since it was off to the side, it was quiet and perfect for just that purpose! The problem was that it only had a small window and therefore was a bit dark. I knew I needed to brighten it up so I went to the local home improvement store and purchased some paint. Painting a room is one of the most easiest and inexpensive ways of altering a room's appearance.
Next I had to think about furnishing this space. Luckily I found a nice, comfortable wing back chair at a neighbors yard sale. You can find many a bargain at yard sales, if you're early enough. I was able to purchase this immaculate chair for $15.00. It looked brand new. In fact my neighbor said she never even used it.
Then I needed a small table next to the chair so I would have a place to sit a drink and a snack. I remembered that I had just the thing in my garage. A little soap, water and elbow grease and it was good as new. I also found a table lamp in the garage I had forgotten I had.A close friend had given it to me but, at the time I had nowhere to put it. Now I had the perfect spot!
To finish off the look, I went to the nearby dollar store and found some cheap pictures already in frames for the walls and a beautiful throw pillow for the chair to complete my look. I spent a grand total of $65.00 to transform this otherwise unusable space into a beautiful reading nook that I use quite often now.
With a little thought and intuition you can turn that drab space into something special and useful. It doesn't take a lot of hard work or money to make an area that is not only appealing to the eye, but something that you can use frequently and can be proud of. So get out there and make something you can use and enjoy daily.
